Indians – Don’t be Fooled by Hair Colors – Its ads & brand Ambassadors

Brands and your favourite Bollywood Divas be fooled you and now its crucial to ditch Hair color

One day you get out of bed in the morning, see the mirror and notice a couple of white/grey hair strands on the front. And your dream of looking young forever just drown away in the water right then and there. And you suddenly recall those ads of your favourite Bollywood divas advertising the first hair color of dreams. They tell you the different story behind every hair color and what made that hair color so unique that you should stop watching the T.V and buy the hair color right now. To make the things easier for you girls, they sometimes give you the hair colouring ideas too. So Cool Huhhhhhh! You get the new mission of doing research which brand and color will suit you the most or the other side of story is, why do you even put efforts for doing research when your favourite Bollywood Diva is the Brand Ambassador?

You always wanted to know their beauty secrets, you always wanted to look like her right?? Today is the chance, your diva just disclosed the secret of her luscious silky hair! Why are you thinking too much girl, Just throw your investments in those expensive hair colors, which will soon give you few more luscious white hair strands. Not only this, they love their fans a lot –  it might be so hectic for their fans or for you to take care of thousands strands clinging on your head, don’t worry those strands will be lifeless and shredded soon. Now you can perfectly take care of remaining white strands.

Personally, I don’t advise teenagers/ to premature greying people to look at those advertisements and use the hair color, people who are aged and have white head can consider hair color while keeping the health compromises in mind.

Teenagers – You have 1 or 2 white strands initially but after few months of using those colors, you end up getting thousands. You started all this hair color drama to cover up those 1-2 strands and now after a few months it has become your compulsion to put loads of chemical to your hair. It becomes the 1 and only option to chemically treat your hair to look younger. Brands only provoke you once to buy the color and the great thing for them is: You are addicted for lifetime, you can’t ditch them 😉 Great Business hhuhhhh! A Big Clapppp for hair color business!

What are you losing by using these hair colors?

Long term side effects, how are they killing you – It’s like a slow poison

A potential link between hair-coloring and cancer has been debated for years. The American Cancer Society states, “The evidence from these studies remain quite inconclusive. Most of the available evidence does not support a link to cancer risk. Those studies that do show a link find that it is too weak to be considered a major public health concern.”

A study from the University of Southern California in 2001 found a doubling of the rate of bladder cancer for women who regularly used permanent dye on their hair, as well as for hair stylists who worked with such dyes. However, those results were not replicated in subsequent studies.

The American Cancer Society believes that larger studies are needed and notes that some ingredients in hair coloring products have caused cancer in lab animals.

The most common after effect of hair coloring is allergic reactions. Hair colors contain ingredients which work as allergy inducing sensitizers. Elements like PPD are known to cause itching, swelling, scalp puffiness and even difficulty in breathing. They can also lead to arthritis, hay fever and leukemia.

Some people get only mild forms of reaction like irritation on the upper eyelid or rims of the ear. A severe form of such irritation is anaphylactic shock. In this the mouth and tongue get swelled which constricts the airways. This can be fatal and several such cases have been reported which have been caused by hair dyes.

Irritation of the skin is another after effect of hair dyes that is quite prevalent. Redness of the skin, itching and burning sensations is often reported by people. It is recommended that you perform a skin patch test before using a hair color.

People who use hair colors often suffer from hair breakage. Excessive use of hair dyes makes the hair dry and fragile which may break off easily. You must deep condition your hair and use products specifically meant for dyed hair.

Some people develop patches of discolored skin around the hairline. This is caused by hair dyes. It is essential that you take special precaution while coloring the hair around the hairline.

Hair stylists who are exposed to persulfates and PPD of hair dyes have increased chances of getting asthma attacks.

Studies are being conducted to find links between hair dyes and risk of cancer. It has been found that hair dyes are linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Women who have been using hair colors for longer period have an increased risk of developing this cancer.

Hairstylists are at a greater risk of developing breast cancer. They also have increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma.

In view of the side effects of hair colors you must think twice before getting your hair dyed. Is coloring the hair worth the risks associated with it? Ask yourself and then decide to go for hair dyes.

The No-Difference Between Ammonia and Ammonia-Free Hair Color

The primary function is to raise the pH of the hair sufficiently so as to open the cuticle and allow the color to enter the cortex of the hair. Depending on the percentage of ammonia in each color this can vary as to how high the pH of the hair is taken. The more ammonia there is in the product, the higher the pH of the hair.  The cuticle is generally expanded to such an extent as to allow the color to easily enter the cortex.

The secondary function of ammonia is to neutralize the existing pigments to a greater degree, which happens when ammonia is mixed with peroxide. Unfortunately there are three main side effects:

  1. At the same time that the color is swelling the cuticle to easily enter the cortex, there is significant protein and moisture loss. This is how the hair is damaged during coloring when using an ammonia color.
  2. The pH of the hair is raised to such an extent by the ammonia that it is physically impossible to return it to its ideal pH after coloring. This means that the cuticle remains open, the hair continues to lose protein and moisture and there is also an increased risk of color fade.
  3. As a result of the cuticle remaining open, the percentage of pigment in the color needs to be as high as possible. This is necessary as a relatively high percentage of the color will be lost when rinsing off at the backwash. Plus, due to the greater neutralization of the pigment by the ammonia-peroxide mix, a higher pigment percentage is required.

More and more companies are now removing ammonia from their hair colors. This is commendable as ammonia is an extremely harsh chemical and doesn’t need to be in hair color. Unfortunately the vast majority of these colors have merely removed ammonia from the color and replaced it with an ingredient called ethanolamine, but the same three side effects mentioned above still apply. The rule that the more ammonia there is in the color, the higher the pH applies to ethanolamine as well. All they have achieved is to remove ammonia from their colors; they haven’t managed to decrease the pH that these colors take the hair to.

  • Once used and never to buy-Bigen Journey ends.
  • The product was a big disappointment for my sister. It was ammonia based and it made her hair rough and brittle. Some of her hair patches shrink as if acid was sprayed on them.Once used and Never forever is what my sister reviews it. She was not happy with the results, her hair texture felt like dry, burnt & rough.

“Ap aise marange, Ap baaloon ko to color karwa lijiye”

My take on the ads

I personally want to interview every actor and actress who are advertising the hair color brands, have they ever used the hair color personally to cover up the greys. If they really have, I bet they won’t have that luscious silky hair they showcase in every ad and movies.

  • Sonam, frieda Says “Girls say yes to color”, Like the gvt. poster on the street wall says “Say No to smoking or Polythene bangs”. Sonam kapoor make us feel like, she is so proud and saving the world by selling the hair color to girls. And it won’t be no future of girls without hair color in India. Yeah, actually she is right, she is contributing in Indian Economy by this great hair color business! She is actually contributing to the great cause, hair color should become more important than education for girls in India. Hats off to you Sonam!
  • Juhi Says “Peeche ke baal abhi bhi safed dikh rahe hai”, dear juhi, we are common people and created by the god. Bollywood divas are supposed to look perfect on camera but we common people are not perfect and we have lot other work than to take care of “peeche ke safed baal” which is thankfully the result of hair color we used when we only had few strands. So you please SHUT UP!
  • Karishma Says – “Take care”, she claims that her garnier hair color has “Oilves ka potion in hair color”, Yes we got you very well karishma and heard somebody saying “unlike Garnier that will make you bald!  If you can avoid colour there is nothing like it” Now when we are already on the stage of going bald, even after your colour was healthy for hair because of the olives, your brand put in it. We actually have to take care and buy a HAIR WIG. Now I am actually wondering, if you are using the garnier color since long, you too might be putting a WIG in garnier ad.. Am I right Mrs Karishma?? When you have already disclosed your shiny hair secret, please let us also know which WIG you wore in ad! It was actually so cool!!! 😉
  • Akshay Kumar says – “Ap aise marenge, Ap baaloon ko to color karwa lijiye” Yaar akshay, please usko marne to do bechaare ko. He is dying without cancer & blindness – at-least shanti se to marega. After he use hair color, he will struggle with lots of health problems and he might go bald too. Don’t you think, It won’t look good to die bald than dying with white hair. Om shanti!

Considerations  – Alternatives

Chemically based hair coloring products contain some nasty stuff. There are perfectly good substitutes, such as plant-based henna dye and something secret (Which will be discussed in another article soon), that don’t contain such risks. You can avoid any potential health risks associated with hair coloring by choosing products that are not only safer but also environmentally friendly. Call it a win-win solution.
