If you are not aware of my acne history, let me take a step back and begin. I have been dealing with acne-prone skin since my high school years and rest is just history. Acne itself is just one issue but it comes with few other problems like side dishes comes with the main dish in a fancy restaurant. For me, acne appeared with other behavioral problems like rubbing and picking up my face multiple times a day that I couldn’t resist but pick. And all this has given me red facial skin, pitted scars and discoloration.

As I started earning and became financially independent, I decided to take some charge for my uninvited acne here and there on my face and other areas on my body. Not only I was recommended natural treatments by my friends and relatives but those weird treatments and rituals didn’t make any sense. I have tried all the possible acne treatments you name it. I burned thousands of dollars but all seems to show only temporary results. Even Accutane has not been promising.

Let’s get to the point, at the age of 32 I am 90% acne free but now my only concern is to fade acne scars or getting rid of acne scars forever.

 

My first derma roller to fade acne scars

I got introduced to Dermaroller and started taking acne treatment to fade acne scars around 2015 in a professional setting. Where I was charged for consultation, a roller, and treatment. I was a bit skeptical but I could easily afford the treatment back in India and I decided to give it a try and got 3 sessions in total within 6 months. Since I was still getting facial acne so it barely made any difference, though my previous scarring was starting to fade; I was getting new at the same time.

After few years, I decided to give the derma needling a try one more time and do my own thing.

 

Dermaroller VS Dr. Pen Microneedling

First, if you are looking for non-invasive acne treatment or a bit cheaper than acne laser treatment for teens or adults, I believe it’s the best way to get rid of acne scars with no downtime. Now Finally, I own a Dermapen/skin pen microneedling at home.

 

Dermaroller:  It is really cheap to buy your own dermaroller and can be used multiple times after sterilizing properly. If you are a newbie and not sure about continuing the treatment for a long time or you only have a small area to treat. It is recommended to buy the smallest dermaroller/ dermaneedle for use and throw purpose.

The biggest downside I experienced while treating myself with manual dermaroller at home is; it is really hard for you to put even pressure on each area of the skin surface. It is sometimes scary to get extra pressure suddenly on any area of the face, you might end up poking or injure your skin hard. It is really important to be extra careful or get it professionally done, after all, it is about face.

Holding dermaroller in the same position and gradually moving on the face itself is a bit tricky. Again you might pinch or poke yourself hard. It gets easier to get bruises or bloody scratches while doing it yourself (It did myself sometimes 🙂 )

You have to buy new dermaroller for different needle sizes.

 

Dr Pen/ Dermaroller pen:  Dr. Pen is a little on the pricier side. If you are planning to use it for the long term and for multiple sessions while you are confident enough to do it at home. You should really own one! I have done only one session with my Dr pen but I must accept, I really invested in something good which will last me a long time.  By The way, It was a birthday present for me to myself.

I really loved how it glides very smoothly on the skin. Since it is an automatic pen wherein you have adjusted the needle depth/size and the speed of them poking your face. You don’t need to be very precise about the position and pressure as it is automatically already taken care of.

Though, you still have to buy a new needle for each session accordingly. My dermapen made me around $55 CAD from wish.com.
