How to Find That Little Black Dress

The one thing that every woman should have in her wardrobe is definitely a little black dress. There are many opinions on what makes a little black dress so special and adjustable to all kinds of occasions – from an elegant and classy look to something more daring and provoking. But the key is in finding the right one in terms of shape, length and material.

Dress for your body type

Even though black is your ally because it makes all body types look smaller, still you have to choose wisely because not all forms flatter all body shapes. You need to know what will work for your body so look for dresses online  to get a general idea.

For example, if you have a curvy figure you can either choose to emphasise your curves by picking a tight dress, but not too tight since you definitely do not want your outfit to be distasteful. Yet, if you aspire to conceal your curves, a good option would be an A-lined dress that will camouflage the lower part of your figure.

If you are petite opt for a knee-length dress that will make you seem taller, always go for heels and make sure it fits properly on the waits and hips. On the other hand, if you are a V-body type, which means your shoulders are broad but your hips are small, make sure that you find a dress with a V-neck that will give the illusion of narrow shoulders. If you have a full figure you need to choose a well-tailored dress that will highlight your best points.

Look at your figure, find the narrowest part of your body and bring that area into focus with a belt. You can also add layers to give the dress more structure but try not to layer black on black.  When shopping always remember that most clothes are made for model-like figures and may not look right on you because they were made for an impossible standard. So remember that tailoring is a great tool to have in mind when shopping. Look for ways to ways to modify an outfit if possible, a tailor can trim the hem, shorten the sleeves or even make the dress a bit longer.

Material matters

Taking into consideration the fact that you do not buy a little black dress every season, but instead your dress will take up a special place in your wardrobe for at least a couple of years, you want the material to be quality and natural, something that will look stunning but comfortable at the same time. What you ought to avoid are certainly synthetic fabrics. Their price is indeed lower than those of wool or cotton, but not only will they make your dress look cheap the chances are that it won’t feel comfortable on your skin. Moreover, synthetic materials tend to stick to the body, stressing out all the flaws you might want to hide and may contain harmful toxins.

For those cold winter days the perfect choice would be a knit dress; you can wear it during the day with some coloured tights and flat boots and maybe a matching scarf matching, making a casual but effective outfit. On occasions such as dates, dinners etc all you need to make your outfit stand out is an elegant piece of jewellery and an envelope bag. When it comes to summertime, try to stick to lighter fabrics like cotton or linen.

Accessorize

Now that you have chosen the right shape and fabric you still have to make a distinction between the casual look of your dress and the elegant one. Accessorising wisely can do miracles. If the occasion demands a more serious kind of look, for example a business cocktail, do not exaggerate with jewellery. A simple silver necklace and a matching bracelet is all you need. And if you are heading to a party, adding some vibrant colours or metallic jewellery to your look would be a perfect choice. All eyes will undoubtedly be on you.
